In September 2015, world leaders in the UN General Assembly adopted a global agenda for sustainable development – Agenda 2030. The agenda include 17 global goals.
Together, the goals are crucial to human prosperity worldwide. The concept of sustainable development was created by the UN World Commission on Environment and Development and was given the definition: Sustainable development = development that satisfies today’s needs without compromising the ability of future generations to satisfy their needs.
Biosphere reserves as arenas for sustainable development
Biosphere reserves play an important role in the work towards the global goals by being neutral arenas for collaboration, connecting actors, maintaining well-functioning ecosystems and promoting learning for sustainable development. If the goals are to be achieved, societies need to change.
Biosphere reserves function as model areas for sustainable development and play an important role in providing good examples of how the agenda can be implemented.
The Biosphere Program Sweden and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency have, with the help of the Stockholm Resilience Center, produced Report 6742 “Swedish Biosphere Reserves as Arenas for Implementing the 2030 Agenda. Analysis and practice”.
The summary describes the role of the biosphere reserves as follows:
“The Biosphere Program Sweden has over ten years of experience in integrated sustainable development in practice and can be a guide in the implementation of Agenda 2030, locally and regionally, by:
- constitute arenas for collaboration
- connect actors – vertically and horizontally
- Integrate the Global Goals for Sustainable Development
- maintain well-functioning ecosystems
- promote learning for sustainable development
The biosphere reserves’ solid experience of working practically with sustainable development in a Swedish context makes them extremely suitable as strategic core areas to learn from, support and invest in during the work of implementing Agena 2030 and the Global Goals in Sweden.”
